Special Historic Site Former Kanya School (Japanese Heritage)

On April 24, 2015, the former Kanya Gakko was recognized as a Japan Heritage site as "Educational Heritage Sites in Early Modern Japan - The True Source of the Spirit of Learning and Civility.
Kanya Gakko was founded in the 10th year of the Kanbun Era by Mitsumasa Ikeda, feudal lord of Okayama, under the order of Nagatada Tsuda, for the purpose of educating the common people. Most of the buildings, including the auditorium (a national treasure), the mausoleum, and the Kanya Shrine, have been designated as national important cultural properties. Visitors can also enjoy the trees and flowers that change color from season to season. The large Kai trees, which turn red and yellow during the autumn foliage season, are especially breathtaking.
