
It is said that in Engen 3, Nitta Yoshisada attacked Matenyama Castle, a branch of Mitsuishi Castle, and buried his head after conducting an experiment on the head at this site.
It is beneficial for illnesses from the neck up. It is said that it is good to pick up an egg-shaped smooth stone on the riverbank, write your wish, name, address, etc. on it and offer it to the deity.
Incidentally, the main hall of "Hoshozan Kanaya-ji Shokoin," located just north of the head mound, was originally built on the site of the head mound and later moved to its current location.
In the 3rd year of the Engen period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, a large army of Nitta Sadayoshi of the Southern Dynasty attacked and felled Matenyama Castle, a branch castle of Mitsuishi Castle ruled by Akamatsu Enshin of the Northern Dynasty, and buried him here after a ceremony to test his head.
It is said that the villagers of Kanaya mourned him and built a monument to him. Even today, there are many worshippers who visit the shrine for its miraculous power to cure illnesses from the neck up.
